SECOND HAND

If you are looking for a slightly unusual item, or one that is expensive or well outside your budget, a good suggestion is to look for the item second hand. These days there are many different ways you can track down items that are in as new condition, but that are a fraction of their price if purchased brand new.

Of course, the main place to look if you prefer to shop online is eBay. With a huge network around the world and millions of users, eBay offers a huge range of items and products and you may find you get it for a real bargain. As with any auction-based system, you do have to have a bidding strategy – some people prefer to place a high bid early in the auction period to scare off other buyers, whilst others will wait until the last few seconds before the auction ends and place a high bid. This second method is known as ‘bid sniping’, and can be very effective, particularly if the item has interest from other buyers, and you want to avoid bumping up the price prematurely.

If you don’t mind shopping around (and digging through piles of junk), you can also try garage and boot sales, as well as charity shops and second hand stores. Market stalls are also a good place to find great deals on second hand goods. As with all purchases, make sure you check the item out properly prior to buying – make sure it is in working order, and if electrical, ask if it has a warranty or money-back guarantee. You never know what you treasure you might find buried amongst other people’s second hand goods.
